Abstract
Fused fiber couplers are known to be capable of achieving variable coupling ratios at minimum loss. The coupling and loss are, however, sensitive to the fiber geometry, taper, and index of the surrounding medium.1-3 Typically, preparation prior to fusion draw includes grinding and/or acid etching of the cladding to decrease the core separation.4
