Abstract
Some impurities similar to phosphorus, which played an important role in loss increases, in natural silica tubes used as jacketing material have been suggested to diffuse and contaminate synthetic core and cladding parts in single-mode fibers by electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements. The precursor of the Ge E' center was produced with the impurities diffused into the optical path, by which the radiation and hydrogen loss increases were enhanced.
