Abstract

Single-fiber interferometers or polarimeters have been demonstrated which offer several advantages to their Mach-Zehnder counterparts (e.g.. simplicity in design and enhanced immunity to environmental noise) and are potentially competitive in sensitivity.1 In high-birefringence single-mode fibers, the two polarization eigenmodes propagate with different phase velocities determined by the refractive indices along the fiber principal axes. The interference pattern results from mixing the two polarization eigenmodes at the photodetector.
