Abstract

The rapidly evolving fiber-optic technology has penetrated the interexchange and long-distance telecommunication market. Wire media, both the twisted pair and coaxial cables, have been the traditional media for telecommunication design in buildings. Fiber offers the advantage of high bandwidth, small size, light weight, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and security—all advantages for premise applications. Fiber is particularly well suited for the backbone where many signals can be multiplexed onto it.
