Abstract

Single-mode optical transmission of ever-increasing quantities of Information can be made in one of the two following ways: at a given bit rate, by wavelength division multiplexing but at the expense of an increased complexity of the receiver, transmitter, and insertion losses that reduce the span; by an increase of the line data rate by time multiplexing. The latter solution is most often chosen with bit rates ranging from 280 Mbit/sec to 1 Gbit/sec.
