Abstract

In wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) lightwave systems an important consideration is the amount of interference between channels due to nonlinear optical effects in the fiber. Calculations show that one such nonlinear effect, namely, cross-phase modulation, which is due to the nonlinear refractive index of silica, can cause detrimental effects in phase-sensitive WDM systems at power levels presently available from injection lasers.1 We report experimental verification of this nonlinear interaction.
