Abstract
This paper discusses use of fiber-optic technology tor facility local area networks, i.e., intrapremises communication systems aimed at supporting a wide range of user protocols. Supported protocols may range from low-speed asynchronous terminal links through a synchronous digital voice to high-speed data base access. The paper addresses the cost, technical performance, and availability/reliability aspects of such networks and discusses how these aspects are related to the choice of transmission medium, network topology, and internal multiple- access method.
