Abstract

Two types of the optical fiber loss increase phenomenon caused by hydrogen molecules have been reported1: absorption loss increase due to diffused hydrogen molecules in silica glass2 and hydroxyl absorption loss increase formed by chemical reaction between diffused hydrogen and glass.3 In this paper, the hydroxyl loss increase characteristics of phosphorus-free graded-index (GI) and single-mode (SM) fibers in the hydrogen atmosphere are discussed.
