Abstract
The rationale for choosing certain parameters for use in specifying multimode and single-mode fibers is given. The close relationship between parameter definitions and measurement techniques is explored. The most commonly used techniques for measuring attenuation, dispersion, bandwidth, profile and geometrical parameters, mode-field diameter, and cutoff wavelength are described. Efforts to com pare different techniques are discussed along with the current status of fiber measurement standards.
