Abstract

Until recently the larger attenuation of dispersion shifted fibre in comparison with that of conventional monomode fibre precluded its use in long-span optical transmission systems. However, new developments in dispersion shifted fibre technology (1) have resulted in successful transmission over spans well in excess of 200 km at 34 and 140 Mbit/s, using a commercial multi-longitudinal mode 1550 nm laser.
