Abstract

Optical fibers for undersea applications have been prooftested at 1.4 GPa (200 ksi) in order to insure survival during possible recovery of the cables from the ocean. The preparation of more than 500 km of low loss single mode fibers for use in a deep water sea trial conducted in the Atlantic Ocean in 1982 resulted in a yield of 74% for lengths greater than 2.5 km and average lengths of 6.2 km. (1) Since that time this technology has been successfully implemented into large scale production resulting in average lengths of 8 km at 1.4 GPa (200 ksi).(2)
