Abstract
The current status of worldwide research and development activities relating to fiber-optic local area networks and fiber-optic data and video distribution will be reviewed and the different approaches compared. Eric Rawson was educated in physics at Toronto and Saskatchewan. From 1966 to 1973 he was on the technical staff at Beil Laboratories. He is currently manager of the Electro-Optics Area at the Xerox Research Center in Palo Alto, Calif., where he is active in fiber-optic local area network research and modal noise studies.
