Abstract
There have been several studies published on the effect of draw tension on the loss of optical fibers. One study1 on step-index fibers found a sharp decrease in loss as tension increased from 5 to 10 g, then a gradual increase in loss as tension increased above 35 g. Another study2 found a gradual decrease in loss for increasing tension at all levels for a graded-index GeO2–P2O5–SiO2 preform. A third study3, found the loss to be independent of tension over the entire range. All had average B coefficients in excess of 0.7 dB/km. The present study employed graded-index GeO2–P2O5–SiO2 fibers, and a significant decrease in loss was observed as tension was increased from 5 to 25 g.
