Abstract

Microwave fiber optics (FO) have many applications. Commercially, multiplexed video signals and rf carrier transmissions are well suited to satellite communications terminals and microwave radios. In military applications, jamming-resistant spread- spectrum microwave and millimeter-wave communications and target acquisition systems can directly transmit information at rf carrier frequencies through fiber cable with a favorable SNR and dynamic range. This occurs while minimizing transmission losses. The microwave FO link is also practical for electronic countermeasures (ECM) and radar signal processing. However, most of the practical microwave FO systems reported so far have an operational frequency below 3 GHz. This paper presents a wideband FO link of 4.4-5.0 GHz at a distance of 1 km. The 4.4-5.0-GHz frequency was selected as an example to demonstrate the tactical radio remoting as well as the system decoy for avoiding a radiation-seeking missile attack.
