Abstract
Low-intensity noise characteristics are required in applicatons of laser diodes for video signal transmission and audio or video signal processing systems. Stable single-longitudinal-mode operation is necessary to suppress excess noise generated by longitudinal-mode competition.1 We recently developed a new buried-heterostructure-type laser, called a buried convex waveguide structure (BCS) laser, in the wavelength range between 750 and 870 nm.2 The BCS laser has a very low-threshold current of 15-25 mA and a highly stable transverse mode oscillation up to an output power level of 20 mW/facet. Here we report the longitudinal-mode behaviors and noise characteristics of the BCS laser.
