Abstract
The Intrinsic noise of a diode laser is an important factor in the SNR of high-frequency optical fiber links. At frequencies around the laser’s resonant frequency and at moderate light levels it is the dominant factor. Both the link frequency response and the laser noise contribution to the link noise are proportional to the square of the detector current. This means that above a moderate light level, the link's SNR is only marginally improved by higher light levels or increased detector multiplication.
