Abstract
Fiber-optic magnetometers which offer extremely high sensitivities coupled with room temperature operation have recently been developed.12 These devices utilize magnetostrictive jackets or coatings to modulate the optical path length of single-mode fiber deployed in the arm of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Minimum detectable fields as low as 10-9 G/m of fiber have been achieved using selected metallic glasses as magnetostrictive materials. In practice, however, It is often more desirable to detect the gradient of the local magnetic field rather than Its absolute magnitude. This paper re- ports the first successful demonstration of a gradient field magnetic sensor based on fiber optics, describes some of the unique features of the device design, and provides typical data on sensor performance.
