Abstract
Stabilized single-mode fiber couplers will find increasing application in interferometric sensors and in data bus distribution systems. These couplers have been fabricated by a variety of methods, ineluding etching and subsequent encapsulation,1 polishing,2 and fusion.3 Although little data have been published, it has become evident that these types of coupler typically do not preserve optical polarization through the coupler. Instead linearly polarized inputs are often transformed to highly elliptical states upon exiting the coupler. Since these couplers are often used in series and the coupling fraction typically varies with the Input polarization state, these effects lead to reduced sensitivity and polarization noise In Interferometers and to nonoptimum coupling fractions in fiber data buses.
