Abstract

The MCVD process, first described in 1974,1 has demonstrated a capability for the fabrication of high-quality optical fiber. As in the evolution of all new technologies, the process now faces the challenge of mass production to realize economic advantages of scale. This must be accomplished while still maintaining the high quality as demonstrated in the laboratory. This paper will discuss the transfer of MCVD to large scale production, the problems encountered, and the resultant fiber performance.
