Abstract

FD-2 is a DS-2 rate optical fiber transmission system for interoffice trunking which meets rigorous requirements for immunity to electrostatic discharge (ESD), electromagnetic interference (EMI), and adjacent channel module insertion in the transmit- receive terminal electronics. The receiver module is shown in Fig. 1 and the transmitter in Fig. 2. Ironically, with true EMI immunity in the fiber component of optical transmission systems, repeater modules require increasingly careful design to match the environmental immunity of the fiber and achieve an EMI-proof system. This can be especially difficult with high receiver sensitivity in a nonintegrated transimpedance preamplifier and a centralized high voltage (HV) supply for avalanche photodiode gain control.
