Abstract

In designing conventional matched-cladding monomode fibers there is a major compromise between susceptibility to joint loss and sensitivity to bending.1 Theoretical studies2 suggest advantages for depressed-cladding (or W) structures in terms of dispersion and mode field width, which might ease design tolerances. Recently depressed-cladding designs have been suggested for decreasing the loss in monomode fibers due to germania-related scattering and absorption3 and optimizing the dispersion at 1.3 μm.4
