Abstract

Lightguides with depressed-index claddings are potential single-mode media for system operating wavelengths near 1.3μm.1-3 However, they have been observed to have high losses at longer wavelengths. A comprehensive numerical study is presented that (1) indicates how depressed cladding lightguide parameters influence the wavelength of minimum dispersion; (2) describes the leaky-mode mechanism responsible for radiative losses of the fundamental mode; and (3) provides guidelines for maintaining low losses in experimental fibers.
