Abstract
Manufacturing of optical fibers has changed dramatically over the past several years as the industry has progressed from the R/D stage to full-scale production. In addition to a rapid increase in market demand, there have been significant improvements in optical performance. This increased volume, accompanied by improved performance, has necessitated the "industrialization" of manufacturing processes which can be routinely operated by plant production personnel. The equipment and processes are highly automated, resulting in reliable, reproducible products. The processes now used by Corning in the production of optical fibers will be discussed. Some recent improvements in the OVD process will be used to illustrate the flexibility of this process.
