Abstract

We describe CW operation of a coupled multiple stripe (CMS)1 quantum well injection laser array wherein, by optically coupling radiation between adjacent stripes, phase-locking and lateral transverse mode stability are achieved. For this laser, uncoated facets experience catastrophic failure at CW output powers as high as 410 mW. Previously, phase-locked injection lasers have been operated under only pulsed conditions, while CW broad area lasers exhibit filamentary behavior.
