Abstract

As applications for lightwave systems expand, the need for low-loss, low-cross-talk-level, optical-fiber switches arises. Work has previously been reported on moving fiber,1,2 moving beam,3 liquid crystal,4 and electrooptic switches.5 In spite of their stow switching speed, moving fiber switches have great potential for multimode fiber switching because of their low insertion loss.2 In this paper a moving fiber array switch is described which utilizes the preferentially etched positive and negative silicon chips6 (Fig. 1) previously developed for fiber array splices.7 Using available chips with 12 grooves, up to 12 times 1 × 2 switches can easily be assembled (equivalent to an electrical 12-pole double-throw switch).
