Abstract

Experiments are reported that demonstrate the ability of OTDR to measure core diameter fluctuations. A waveguide with nearly sinusoidal o.d. fluctuations of 2.5-μm amplitude (1.0-μm core diam variation) was measured. The results indicate a change in local waveguide attenuation of 1.5-dB/km/μm change in core diameter.
