Hybrid integration of active and passive devices

Abstract

Many active optical waveguide devices may be constructed on lithium niobate single-crystal substrates, for example, y-junction switches and interferometric modulators. The number of devices that can be fabricated in series is restricted by photolithographic limitations; hence it is desirable to be able to interconnect discrete active chips and to combine them with passive glass waveguide circuits.
