Abstract
The vapor-phase axial deposition method1 proposed in 1977 has a great advantage in fiber preform mass fabrication in that it comprises a continuous process of soot glass deposition and consolidation into a transparent preform, giving continuous preform fabrication. The longest fiber prepared in this way has been 30 km,2 but we achieved continuous fabrication of a VAD preform for a 100-km fiber. The fabrication techniques of such a large-size preform and the fiber characteristics are described in this paper. A schematic diagram of the continuous consolidation method is shown in Fig. 1.
