Transfer-molded biconical connector for signal-mode fiber interconnections

Abstract

Low-loss high-precision connectors are important interconnection elements in future high-bit-rate and long-haul transmission systems utilizing single-mode fibers. For multimode fibers, the technique of transfer-molding low-loss biconical connectors has been well developed, with mean offsets of 2.2 μm and maximum tilt angles of 1° having been achieved.1 To keep interconnection losses below 1 dB for single-mode fibers, however, an improvement in the precision of alignment had to be achieved.2,3 This was accomplished by incorporating a sliding jewel on the fiber in the connector plug. As a result, fiber offsets could be reduced to typically <1 μm and tilt angles to below 0.2°.
