Abstract

A problem which has almost universally plagued the fabrication of Ti-diffused strip waveguides is the simultaneous production, accompanying the out- diffusion of Li2O, of a surface guide for light polarized along the c axis. Because of the surface guide, light polarized along the z direction is not well confined to the strip waveguides, making such waveguides unsuitable for use in devices requiring this polarization.
