Small-scale core fluctuations in multimode MCVD fibers

Abstract

We have used transverse interference fringes to probe the uniformity of MCVD multimode fiber cores. When the refractive indices of the cladding and the liquid in which the fiber is immersed are unequal, the fringes undergo a slope reversal at the points rf near the core-cladding boundary. The results of a parametric study of the fringe-shape equation show that the location of these two points is dependent primarily upon the fiber core diameter d and the refractive-index profile parameter α.
