Abstract
While numerical solutions are generally more accurate than analytical ones, the latter often yield explicit expressions indicating the way fabrication work may be improved. As summarized by Sammut,1 the various analytical approaches proposed previously are not satisfactory when used to predict dispersion properties of a monomode optical fiber. This paper presents a new analytical expression for waveguide dispersion, which is far more accurate than previously published results. We take advantage of the Rudolph-Neumann approximation, but, unlike the previous work in which the approximation is introduced at the start, we introduce it at later stages of the derivation.
