Abstract
Of glasses which have been suggested as possible low loss fiber materials, zirconium fluoride based compositions seem most promising for reasons related to environmental stability, toxicity, and potential transparency. The originally reported three-component glasses require rapid quenching to avoid crystallization.1 However, fibers have been drawn from cast rods of a three-component giass.2 In our laboratory, modified compositions and the use of improved raw materials and preparation procedures have permitted the cooling of glass batches in the melting crucibles without crystallization and the first demonstration of the drawing of crystal-free fluoride glass fibers.
