Abstract
Long-length high-strength low-loss optical fibers are now being routinely fabricated through careful control of process fabrication parameters. However, a key problem associated with the application of optical fibers is the degradation of their high- strength properties. The degradation in strength usually occurs when the fiber’s glass surface is subjected, in the presence of moisture, to a load for an extended period of time. This phenomenon is known as stress corrosion or static fatigue.
