Abstract

In the new environment of fiber optics, network economics may not be determined by repeater spacing or even channel capacity but by other attributes such as versatility. A versatile transmission system can be redeployed at minimum cost as the mix of traffic in the network changes. It should be capable of carrying analog or digital traffic of varying Information rates. This new approach to optical system design and a realization which meets the objective are described below. Figure 1 shows the basic parts of the system.
