North America’s first 1.3-μm laser transmission system

Abstract

The first operational long-wavelength laser telephone trunking system in North America is described. The actual link is 17.1 km long, and no repeaters are used. The 44.7-Mbit/sec FT-3 system system design is such that the link span could be extended to over 21 km without repeaters and still maintain a 6-dB link margin. A route map of the system installation site near Washington, D.C. is shown in Fig. 1.
