Abstract

The Electrical Communication Laboratories are developing a single-mode optical fiber transmission system. The system will be completed by mid-1982 and will be introduced into NTT’s commercial networks soon thereafter. An increase of more than 2×106 circuit-kilometers is expected annually in NTT’s trunk line to accommodate increased traffic of data and facsimile communications, as well as telephone communications. Studies have indicated that a system operating at 400 Mbit/sec is economically attractive and technically feasible for the estimated circuit demands. Since October 1980 NTT has been conducting in the Tokyo suburbs the first field trial of the 400-Mbit/sec transmission system in the 1.3-μm wavelength region using a single-mode fiber cable.
