Abstract
As optical fiber technology continues to unfold it appears that no single fiber design is capable of satisfying the technical and economic requirements of each application. Technical trade offs associated with changes in fiber parameters have been quantified, and several design papers focusing on different functional requirements have appeared.1-3 The economic impact of these changes in fiber parameters has generally not been considered; however, ultimately this should be done if the technology is to utilize resources most cost-effectively.
