Abstract
We have measured the loss coefficient of the simple bending-loss transducer shown schematically in Fig. 1. The transducer structure consists of two mating, ridged plates (2.5 cm x 6 cm). The fiber is placed between the two plates and compressed with a variable load, and the resulting transmission loss is measured. We have investigated the response of various fiber types and also the effects of initial launch conditions. Figure 2 shows data from a short (2-m) length of Corning step-index fiber.
