Abstract

Previous work in the area of molecular-stuffed preforms1 indicated the possibility of producing step-index fibers with low loss, high numerical aperture, low dispersion, and low cost. We discuss the process through which preforms (capable of producing up to 10 km of fiber) are produced in batch quantities. The results given indicate the areas where future work will be concentrated in order to manufacture preforms capable of competing with the attenuation and bandwidth of fiber produced from CVD processes.
