Abstract

The spectral region around 1.3 μm is attractive for several tens of Mbit/sec digital transmission using LED as the region expected for long distance transmission because of low-loss and low materialdispersion characteristics of fibers.1 0.8 μm LED has proven to be a highly reliable optical source.2 Moreover, its optical output power is not sensitive to ambient temperature change and is free from the effects of the reflected optical waves from connectors and splicing points of fibers. 1 μm spectral- region LED’s are expected to be highly reliable and stable optical devices like the 0.8-μm LED’s. For these reasons, a LED system in the 1-μm spectral region has potentials for many applications.
