Optical visual information systems some first results

Abstract

The purpose of this communication is to present some initial results concerning the performance of an optical- fiber-based visual information system using the HI-OVIS as a prototype. The HI-OVIS (Higashi-Ikoma Optical Visual Information System) project, developed under the auspices of the Visual Information System Development Association (VISDA) of the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry, has been operational since July 15,1978, and currently serves 168 subscriber residences, hence about 500 people. This project has been described in the literature,1-3 and, being a first of its kind, has attracted worldwide attention. Results presented concern technical as well as social aspects of the project. The current version of the system used is summarized in Fig. 1 and the equipment used is described in Table 1. For further details of the optical fibers used, see Takeuchi et al.4
