Abstract
Although there are many similarities in the advantages to be gained in using optical fibers for both commercial and military applications, the needs in the Department of Defense (DoD) for optical fibers can be particularly significant and in some cases unique. These range from satellites to aircraft to battlefield command and control centers to underseas. The role of DoD in developing the components for optical-fiber communications, the present program directions, and several eventual applications will be reviewed.
