Abstract
Most free-space optoelectronic interconnects have a common limitation: opto-mechanical alignment. As the optical connections themselves are non-mechanical in nature, a peripheral opto-mechanic system must be employed to mount the various components (e.g. lenses, smart-pixel device) and ensure that the light beams are imaged from the transceivers to the receivers. Passive or active alignment techniques can be employed to align arrays of transceiver with receivers in the various device planes.
