Dependence of double-Rayleigh backscatter noise in Raman amplifiers on gain and pump depletion

Abstract

Double-Rayleigh scattering of signals in Raman amplifiers degrades system performance. Using a self-homodyne technique, we measure the increase in noise with gain and show that pump depletion only slightly reduces the noise.
