Abstract

Long distance (over 500 km) transmission of 10Gb/s based WDM signal using in-line semiconductor optical amplifiers have been successfully demonstrated with BER better than 10−14 utilizing the wavelength modulation technique. With the normal transmission scheme, there is an error floor near the BER of 10−4 regardless of the transmission distance, which is due to the cross gain modulation effect in the SOA.
