Abstract

The IEEE definition of noise figure of RF and microwave amplifiers is reviewed. Two noise figure definitions for optical amplifiers are described that mesh with the IEEE definition in the classical (non-optical) regime. The currently used noise figure definition for optical amplifiers is critiqued.
