Abstract
The waveform distortion in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is suppressed by using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) as a frequency discriminator. We apply this technique to the chirp control by an SOA, and demonstrate that the optical fiber transmission performance is improved over a wide range of SOA input powers. The chirp control and waveform shaping can be achieved without changing the drive settings of the SOA and MZI, even when an optical frequency is switched to another channel located on an equally-spaced wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) grid.
