Abstract

Raman distributed preamplification, which results from sending pump power into the line fiber, from the receive terminal, has been considered in the early days of fiber amplification for extending the range of repeaterless systems [1]. With the advent of erbium-doped fiber amplification, the same technique was used, but with a piece of doped fiber located several tens of kilometers away from the receive terminal [2]. Then, the main power budget improvement was provided by the remotely pumped doped fiber and Raman amplification, in such systems, became only a marginal effect to be taken into account for the optimization [3,4].
