Abstract

A hybrid erbium-doped fiber (EDF) has been developed as gain flattened amplifiers especially for 1.55 μm WDM transmission systems [1][2][3]. The hybrid EDF consists of serially cascaded Al-codoped EDF and P-Al-codoped EDF, and expected to be applicable not only terrestrial systems but also submarine systems. However, when installed in undersea, long-term reliability of the hybrid EDF should be confirmed. Especially, durability against y -ray irradiation is one of important items. In the Al-codoped EDF, some results with regard to the radiation resistance have already been reported [4] [5].
